Are you one of those who are lazy to upgrade to Wordpress 2.7? You are missing a lot many features then.

After I upgraded my blog to Wordpress 2.7, blogging has been much easier. If one of the useful features I use is the comment reply from within the admin panell, then the other is the installation of plugins. You can search and install within the admin panel, without any ftp client. I have now been frantically trying out various plugins, activating and de-activating them. Earlier the number of plugins I used were very few, say 6 to 7. But now, the number has gone upto 16. I wonder is there any limit to using the number of plugins. There maybe few plugins which may increase the load on the server or takes huge time to load the blog page, but I am not sure which one. Everytime, I try to beautify or add new feature to the blog, there is an associated plugin available online. But I think, rather than messing up the code, its better to play with plugins and widgets as it is very easy to maintain.

Few weeks ago, I had been loving foreign food. Maybe it was the Christmas seasonal effect. The Italian pasta’s, lasagne, macaroni, steaks, cheese, toasts with butter, fine apple or orange juice, cakes, waffles, pancakes,..the list goes on.

The one dish I couldn’t had enough of was the pancake. It was too expensive at the restaurant where I had it. To shake off my cravings, I searched Google for vegetarian pancakes.

The original pancake with eggs is good, but what if you want to be a strict vegetarian sometimes. Its just that I don’t mind having blended eggs as in cakes, waffles, etc though I don’t have it in direct form. Confused? Never mind. Read the rest of this entry »

Clearing out Google Reader is a mess. Especially if you are checking them after the vacation. There are 1000+ items in my reader now, to be read by me.

You can easily escape saying, why did you subscribe to them first of all. But that’s where I store all my sources of good read. Just the source. It may or may not contain the best sources. But the journey mostly starts here, if its a blank slate. It then accelerates through clicks and many other interesting websites.

On an overall peek, I found, most of the posts are collections of the past year 2008. The best posts, the popular posts, the top posts, and so and so. Gradually I started making note of all of them one by one, Then suddenly it struck me, why not create a post on it. Rather an aggregated version of all the best collections from various websites. So I started writing this, to form another post of webscape series.

They say “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop“. I guess I became a devil on last thursday. Everything was fine till two weeks before. The Red Hat Linux and Windows 2000 existed co-cooperatively on a single hard disk! But then, some days before, I was unable to boot into Linux. The GRUB loader was not responsive to the keyboard commands. And that was it. I lost the patience. I installed Partition Magic 8, deleted the Linux partitions, one by one, and then re-formatted the whole unallocated space to FAT32. I was happy at my “kartoot” and kept on browsing. Shortly after power went off and I had to restart in the night, during my free time. There it was, the black screen with GRUB Hash command mode edition (or something similar), mocking at me, asking me, “don’t you dare play with me!”

There was no floppy boot diskette. Even if it was there it was of no use, as the floppy disk was not working. I didn’t had a bootable installation cd of any Windows. Recently I had taken the essential software kind of DVD from home, which also contained Win XP SP2 installer image. But there was no CD/DVD writer in the pc. I had just a backup laptop for surfing the net. Now what to do? Read the rest of this entry »

Off late, I have been changing the blog theme quite often. Have you noticed that? I guess I have been bitten by the theme bug again. It happens to me sometimes, whenever I see someone’s blog with beautiful theme. The footer of that blog will contain the theme name and if not licensed by the blog owner, will also contain the theme provider details from where they got the theme. Often, such sites will contain numerous other themes too for free or for premium.

I guess its the girly nature to change the theme often. I have seen professional people sticking onto just one theme for months. Mostly they use premium themes, which costs above 50$ for single user license. I never delete my old themes unless I dislike them or they are not compatible with the new version of Wordpress.

There are the popular smashing magazines themes for free to start with. But then, every individual has their own taste. And for me, I always go for  right-sided 2 or 3 column sidebar, with more space for blogpost, and options for customization. But there are some other small factors like the font and the base colors and the header image used which also helps me in streamlining the choice. Though can be customized easily, I am too lazy to do that, when I consider that I don’t have a permanent header image of my own and there are so many other codings like managing adsense code and other third party widget codes to be placed with every theme.

As of now, I have plans to change again within few days to Blue Grace theme after sailing through Kepple and Silverlight. Lets see how it goes. And those who have email subscription, please check the site out in between so that you don’t miss the action!!
